D-Pad not responsive (solved)

Post by dr_bunsen »

FYI, the D-Pad in my Retrostone was very unresponsive in the left hand direction, no problems in the other directions. I wanted to change the button colors anyway since I have the blue version that came with all grey buttons, so I took the unit apart and found a small piece of silicon (presumably moulding flash or something from the button mat) stuck to the left hand sensor on the circuit board. After I removed the piece of silicon off the board it and put the unit back together, the D-Pad worked great in all directions. Very happy with the colored buttons too, it looks much better than with plain grey in my opinion.

I haven't changed my buttons yet... simple? Just unscrew the case and replace the buttons?

Yes it's simple, there's some screws on the back and then the case halves can be separated. There's also another little board for the back buttons that has two screws in to remove (these are much tighter than the screws on the rear). I was very careful when separating the case halves not to over-strain any cables, although there's just enough slack to allow the case halves to go flat side by side. I also tried to make sure the screen stayed in place by levering the main board up just enough to expose the buttons and remove/replace them with tweezers.

Interestingly the dark/light purple buttons are different. One set is convex, the other concave.
