button assembly... a better way?

Hi,
I've taken the machine apart three times now to correct various issues with the buttons. The first time the L button didn't register, then the second time the R wouldn't and now they all register, but right-up diagonals (vital for run and guns) is VERY hard to pull off.
Before I open it up again and try to fix this, is there any trick I should keep in mind? I'm following the second assembly instruction video posted on the assembly instruction portion of this site, with the "vertical" assembly method, but I was wondering if anyone has had similar problems and can help out.
