Is it really full assembled? And is there really a orange Pi inside or is there a option to upgrade it to a real pi?

It's a custom H3 board, so it's not really an orangepi. But the schematic is similar to orange pi PC.

It's way better because with Raspiboy I use existing gamepad modules and their quality are not always perfect. With Retrostone the controls are directly on my board, so I can be sure they position are perfect and they quality too (gold surface finish).
Also they are driven directly by GPIO so there is no buttons -> USB chips (that is also often defective)

Hi Pierre

I am keen to back the RetroStone project with a friend and back the 'Two at earlybird price' option.

My concerns are the Dpad controls, which seem like could be solved by having them on the board, and also using GPIO not usb connector.

My other concern was the screen quality.

Would it be possible to make a different board that sacrificed the HDMI output so that it could be used as the internal screen connection?

I for one would never use the HDMI output.

Failing this, can you please show better video of the screen, including smaller text?

Thanks Pierre

It will be difficult to make 2 different version of the PCB. It would need start from scratch the pcb design again.

I posted a video on the kickstarter where we can see closer the lcd.

Hey Pierre

Have been monitoring the Kickstarter closely and like what I see. :)

The screen looks good!

I’m still keen to back and am 90% to go for 2x devices.

Regarding the power switch, can this be used to shutdown the RetroStone, or do we have to shutdown via software?

When you shutdown via software, does the screen go crazy like the Raspiboy? This is the one part of the Raspiboy that I do not like.

If the power switch cannot soft shutdown, is it possible to add a button to soft shutdown?

Cheers P!

Thanks for your interest :)
It is better to use the software shutdown first. For the same reason that on raspiboy, hard shutdown can corrupt the SD card. So it's better to do software shutdown first.

But a good point of RetroStone on Raspiboy is that the boot and shutdown time are faster.

Also the LCD does not go crazy blue on RetroStone when shutdown. It stay black.

Yes it's possible to add a soft shutdown button as lot of GPIO are available.
I think I might add one built in btw. Not sure yet. At least I will add the layout on PCB

Glad to hear the LCD stays black! Nice one.

A soft shutdown button would make the product much more user friendly in my opinion, so I really hope you do add that Pierre. Most people don’t even know what’s inside these things so would just use the switch to power off, as they keep doing with my Raspiboy. 😬

Am backing the project this week, 2x RetroStone pledge.

Cheers P!
