USB ports on the raspi boy question

Are the USB ports general purpose? Like can I plug in a usb stick to transfer games? I have poured over everything and can't determine the answer. I can't get far enough into the setup to try as mine isn't detecting any button presses at the moment, but the display is working so that is good.
