pcsx-rearmed hanging raspberry pi with raspiboy config.txt

Hi all!
After a lot of pain / fights I was able to isolate the issue.
I took the raspberry zero out of the handheld so it is just a raspberry zero w running plain retropie except for a customizer config.txt.
If I run pcsx-rearmed (non libretro, clearly) using the customized config.txt from raspiboy project the emulator just...
Hangs the system and I have to reboot rasperry pi.
If I use default config.txt from retropie and connect to hdmi the raspberry zero the emulator works perfectly.
I suspect it is some framebuffer issue...
Can anyone help troubleshooting / fixing?
